Letter from Me to You
10. September 2026
Dear Friend,
(š·šø tekst na srpskom je ispod)
One of the most striking paradoxes of our time is that we have managed to become a generation that is simultaneously overfed yet deeply undernourished. These are two characteristics that, in the long natural history of the human species, were seldom found in the same body at the same time.
Our modern, high-speed, and stressful lifestyles have come with a heavy price tag. We are surrounded by an abundance of highly processed, energy-dense yet nutrient-deficient foods, while our daily lives are largely free from physical exertion. As we speak, every other person in the world is navigating life overweight or obese, and the collective sense is that we are rapidly losing control.
While global hunger rates have thankfully fallen over the past 30 years, no country to date has successfully reversed the rise of obesity once it has taken root. As a consequence, we are seeing the increase of chronic illnesses that cause immense daily struggles worldwide. The reality is that the majority of these conditions are shaped by the simplest, most human elements of our lives: what we eat and drink, how much we move, and how we respond to the heavy weight of stress.
But what is the real promise behind the chocolate, the snacks, the alcohol, or the constant scrolling? Why do we find ourselves pulled toward foods designed to be intensely addictive? What is making us feel so passivated, drained, and lethargicāwith barely any energy left to dance, run in the forest, ride a bike, or chase our children through the fields? What is truly lacking in our lives?
Could it be that, through these comforting habits, we are subconsciously trying to feed our souls? Are we trying to soothe deep, quiet feelings of discomfort, isolation, stress, dissatisfaction, or pain? Perhaps we are desperately attempting to regulateāor at least cover upāour internal emotional state using external means. At its core, this struggle isn’t about food at all; it is about trying to fill an inner emptiness from the outside, substituting calories for the emotional nourishment we are deprived of.
My experience shows exactly that. When it feels entirely impossible to stick to your good intentionsāto eat mindfully or to exerciseāit is not because you lack willpower, and it is certainly not because you aren’t trying hard enough. Your habits are rooted in emotional dysregulation, not a lack of discipline or information.
As a nutritionist and physiologist, my job is to help people understand the beautiful balancing act between the energy we take in through food and the energy we expend through movement. Yet, on this professional journey, the single most valuable lesson I have learned is this: unless holistically managed, emotional urges will always defeat rational restraint. Of course, it is important to understand the way our metabolism functionsāhow it uses energy through movement or stores energy through food intake. However, knowledge alone is unlikely to yield successful, sustainable weight regulation unless the emotional dynamics driving our addictive behaviors are also properly understood and addressed.
In practice, changing these habits can feel incredibly scary. It forces us to look far beyond the menu on our plates, and far beyond the time we spend on the couch. Running from ourselves and from the things that make us feel uneasy is exactly what leaves us feeling “dis-eased” or “ob-e(a)sed.” We indulge in self-destructive behaviorsāwhether that means too much food (or too little), too little movement, or any other escapeājust to cope.
Unfortunately, our modern medical and educational systems often keep us stuck by chasing quick fixes. They frequently fail to recognize the profound unity of the mind and the body, limiting our true capacity to fully recover and thrive. Yet, science provides undisputable proof that we are bio-psycho-social creatures. Our biology and physiology are entirely inseparable from our minds and our relationships. Unhealthy body weight is often just a physical sign of the unresolved emotional burdens we carry deep inside. The exact same psychological factors that regulate your stress, your motivation, and your impulse control are the ones directing your eating and your physical activity patterns.
To me, promoting this holistic path to health is so much more than a matter of academic expertiseāit is my lifeās absolute passion. After 20 years of working in humanitarian field missions with the Red Cross, in hospital settings, and in university research labs, I established Equiliberty Consulting. I wanted to create a space that bridges rigorous, science-backed research with genuine, practice-oriented human empathy. My mission is to help transform your health by transforming your relationship with yourselfānot based on the approval of others, but rooted in authentic self-acceptance. Initially, this journey might bring up the quiet grief of letting go of who you thought you had to be, or who the world wanted you to be. But eventually, that grief dissipates. It is replaced by a profound sense of liberationāan invitation to live a richer, more authentic, and healthier life. Let us take this road together in the name of health, balance, and liberty.
Welcome to Equiliberty.
Warmly,
Dr. Katarina Melzer

Dragi prijatelju,
NaÅ” moderan, brz i stresan naÄin života plaÄamo visokom cenom.
Å ta nam to istinski nedostaje u životu?
Moje iskustvo pokazuje upravo to.
Nažalost, naÅ” moderni medicinski i obrazovni sistem nas Äesto drži zaglavljenima nudeÄi brza reÅ”enja.
Krenimo ovim putem zajedno, u ime zdravlja, balansa i slobode.
DobrodoŔli u Equiliberty.
SrdaÄno,
Dr Katarina Melzer
